New York Stem Cell Foundation
New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) exemplifies the integration of architecture and science. The design of NYSCF accelerates scientific discovery by putting the cutting-edge research on display while also consolidating previously dispersed NYSCF office and research locations under one roof.
Previously located in several dispersed locations throughout the city, the new facility consolidates the foundation’s administrative offices and their research laboratory in one location on a through-block floor connected by an open stair to a large open commons area for collaborative interactive work.
The design of the facility incorporates features that provide a connection between the foundation’s administrative and the research staff. The stem cell laboratory, positioned between the administrative offices and scientists’ workstations, is separated by glass from a central gallery, filling the floor with natural light and putting their ground-breaking research on display.
The use of glass in the design creates a visual connection between the foundation’s two distinct cultures. The transparency allows donors and administrative staff to observe the research without contaminating the area.
An open stair leads to a large commons area on the Second Floor, designed to accommodate informal gathering for collaborative exchange and interaction between staff and scientists, colleagues and invited guests.
The new, flexibly configured lecture space will serve not only the NYSCF community but also allow them to host external meetings and symposia for scientists and innovators from all over the world. The commons area includes conference rooms, a pantry, dining space, casual social space as well as the large flexible lecture hall.
