Located at the Smithsonian Institution’s collection storage campus, the building houses a library, more than one million Native American artifacts from the Gustav Heye collection, curatorial and ritual practice spaces, workshops and conservation laboratories.

The juxtaposition of cultural and institutional objectives greatly influenced the overall form of the building.

The building’s circular lobby, oriented to the cardinal directions, serves as the spiritual and functional center of the building; both the structural and circulation systems originate here.

The collection is housed on three levels below the dramatic radial steel roof structure, which emerges from an orthogonal base that refers to the overall planning of the collections campus.  This rectilinear base provides a hard edge to both the Smithsonian campus and the Suitland community and houses support spaces.

The primary approach to the building is from the east through a stepped entry court, which leads to the central space. A ramp to the main level along the western edge provides an additional entrance from the campus.

The roof’s structural steel framework reveals itself as an open canopy over the entry, while it terminates in a soaring sculptural form at the building’s northwest/rear corner. Throughout the building there is a pronounced concern for achieving an organic unity to the design. Details emerge from the overall design concept and the structural materials, such as the diamond-shaped windows created by the intersection of the pre-cast concrete wall panels.

The articulation of the design in detail and choice of materials responds to the user experience: wood contrasts with the structural steel and concrete to create warmth and, once again, reemphasize the connection between the man-made and the natural.
