Juno Austin
Juno Austin rethinks the design and development of Multi-family residential projects through the use of a Repeatable Component System to accelerate the development process while being thoughtful about carbon reduction and providing simple, smart, and healthy living spaces.
The project is located in East Austin, Texas, a rapidly changing medium density neighborhood that is experiencing substantial new growth through new construction and an incredible change to the feel and experience of the area by way of new restaurants, services, and street life. The area is primarily residential in nature but also includes some office projects along with a relatively quick connection to downtown Austin and The University of Texas to the west and Lady Bird Lake to the south.
Juno East Austin is adjacent to Plaza Saltillo CapMetro Rail Station which is one stop east of downtown Austin and the University of Texas. The rail line also extends north to the Leander suburb and Q2 Stadium. There are several MetroBus lines within a few blocks of the project for additional access to the surrounding areas and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
Overall, the project deployed component-based design, fabrication and installation systems for structural framing, structural demising walls, exterior façade panels, bath pods, and millwork.
The project uses a timber structural system. Mass Plywood Panels (MPP) we used for structural slabs and columns, while Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) was used for structural beams, both of which are carbon sequestering materials. The MPP is fabricated by Freres, who operate as a Zero Waste business, using 100% of every log harvested for production.
This project had the ambition to rethink the way buildings could be designed and constructed, specifically within the Multi-family Residential Market. Ennead worked directly with Juno and their partners (including designers, engineers, fabricators, riggers and installers) to develop and design the component system that was ultimately used to construct this project. The Component System was fully deployed for this project, while at the same time, development of the system was further developed through learning from this project for future 8-12 story residential buildings.
