Previously located on Washington Square Park, the move centralized the College’s home in closer proximity to other CAS facilities and the school’s other academic programs, as well as expand program offerings and facilitate greater collaboration amongst students and faculty. Adapting the building’s pre-existing framework for classrooms, meeting spaces, tutoring spaces, and innovative advising spaces, the building radically reshapes CAS’s approach to learning, serving as a true hub of collaboration and home for its student body.

As one of NYU’s largest colleges, CAS needed a design that reflected its stature.

To give CAS a street-level identity, the design introduces expansive new windows that expose student activity and learning to the public. Internal programs are positioned along the façade, activating the building and connecting it to the urban streetscape. The original cornice, previously removed, was reinstated and restored—offering cohesion with the broader campus and protecting the building envelope.

Sharing the ground floor with the renovated Admissions Center posed spatial and circulation challenges. A movement study using specialized software informed a reconfiguration that guides students to shared spaces on the second floor, choreographing a clear identity and visual presence from entry to upper levels.

The building at 25 West 4th Street was originally constructed in 1920 for light industrial use. Renovating for modern pedagogy meant carefully assessing what to restore, replace, and adapt.

Early charrettes with NYU’s Office of Sustainability set ambitious performance targets. Energy modeling informed envelope improvements, including insulated masonry walls and the replacement of inefficient windows. These interventions support the project’s pursuit of LEED Gold while avoiding the carbon impact of new construction.
