Anchoring the gateway plots of the Pujiang Innovation Corridor, this master plan includes seven buildings arrayed in a rhythmic fashion along the main thoroughfare to the north and the canal to the south, creating a musical repetition and harmonizing with the surrounding urban fabric. Gradually transforming and varying within a common theme, the three phases of campus buildings together form a cohesive yet differentiated response to the standard science and technology R&D typology.
The workplace has evolved into a campus experience of alternative live/work environments for collaboration and innovation. At The Puijiang Science and Creation Corridor, we even embrace the landscape as part of the architecture, creating smart spaces for office, café, conferencing, and exhibition.
The unique corridor-shaped multi-block site that stretches over 2 km long presents many challenges. Rather than segregating the linear site into zoned pockets, the urban design creates a figure ground relationship that is based on the concept of “variations of a theme.”
The figure ground arrangement prioritizes the Expo Building as the gateway structure that is seamlessly integrated with the public park and the subway station. The other six office buildings are designed in a consistent language that promotes a singular campus identity. Individually, each building takes advantage of localized cantilevers and eroded corners to create collaboration gardens that bridge the indoor and outdoor while also creating horizontal floors, allowing for a more spontaneous and inter-connected work environment.
Both plot A & B employ a humanistic approach toward landscape design by prioritizing the pedestrian urban experience throughout the campus.
Vehicular drives and ramps are thoughtfully integrated with plantings, entries and building masses. The edge along the canal is designed as a fully landscaped park that capitalizes on the water views, while mitigating flood risks with a stepped section. This green edge, together with the sunken courtyards in front of the office buildings, provides a memorable drop-off and entry experience for all the visitors and occupants of the campus.
The façade design enhances the inherent dynamism created by the building massing, while also evoking a sense of iconic simplicity. The tower facades are primarily composed of window wall with external shade fins that are made of perforated aluminum panels of two different depths. The podium facades are composed of aluminum framed openings that enhance the flow between the inside and outside, while relating to the module of the façade above. This strategy helps create a consistent yet varied appearance to the volumes of space and serves to cut down solar heat gain and glare and thereby significantly enhances occupant comfort. The implied diagonal pattern, created by varying the depth of the tower fins, starts a dialogue with the language of the Expo Building while adding to the monumental iconicity of the project while viewed from the street or across the canal.
