Oceanwide, Wuhan Central Business District

Inspired by Rockefeller Center, the 10-building Wangjiadun district transforms a former airport into Wuhan’s emerging Central Business District.

Located on the site of the former Wangjiadun Airport, the area is now under development as a major central business district. Our design for the 10-building complex takes inspiration from New York City’s Rockefeller Center. This area combines the iconography of buildings with the memorableness of a clear public space. Even today, it is probably the best example of an internationally-recognized iconic tower that is also associated with an equally memorable, important and iconic civic space.

Siteplan Cropped

We believe future development in China must elevate the quality of civic space that buildings create—shaping memorable pedestrian experiences that invite cultural and educational exchange. Our proposal for this mixed-use development in Wuhan advances that agenda through multiple, complementary design strategies, intended to spark an open dialogue on how the project can set a new benchmark for future growth.
